Never Mind (Friday, December 28th, 2007)

So after three weeks of chatting almost every day, never having a reason to doubt that who I was talking to was who she claimed to be, I've finally stumbled upon the truth: that I've been the victim of an elaborate hoax, and the person I've been talking to is really just an obsessed fan. I feel pretty stupid for falling for it, but she was very convincing - she'd been keeping up this persona for at least a couple of years, telling me only a few details, and she seemed reluctant to finally reveal the name of who she was pretending to be. She's intimately familiar with the history and personal details of who she was pretending to be, recalling events that happened years ago as if she'd been there herself.

A few things got mixed together - some elements of her personal life were really her own, and not those of her persona, but they were things I couldn't really verify. Now that I've uncovered the truth, it's not going to be easy to figure out how much of what she told me is really her, how much of it is the other person she'd been pretending to be, and how much of it she just made up. The whole thing is just creepy.

On the plus side, this isn't someone I've ever been a fan of (I respect her and the motivation behind her work, but that's about as far as it goes). The idea of having personal conversations with a huge celebrity was pretty wild, but that's about it. Still, it's embarrassing that I bought it.
